Photoshop tutorial - Design a nice luxury cars header Comment Icon

One of our Ohio clients has requested that his personal web page should have a header with a few car brands that he loves: Ferrari F430 Spider, Nissan GTR, Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7th Series.

Of course I could have just pasted some cool images of these cars in the header but this would have been simply unprofessional so I decided to mix the images together and "park them all" in our clients website header. A quick search returned these four car images that I've stitched together as they where very large.

Cars Without Background - Graphic DesignMost Photoshop users recommend using the Extract Tool (shortcut: alt+ctrl+X) for removing images backgrounds but in this case I used the Pen Tool as there are many straight lines in car and it just seemed a lot easier. For the nice, rounded corners I just added Anchor Points to the straight lines and made the corners round (Of course this needs a little playing around before you get the right result for it). Then, I created selections following the new made shapes and used them to bring the cars to a new layer (shortcut: ctrl+shift+J). After removing each background I ended up with four images that didn't even look like real cars as some had only 3 wheels.

So I put in a header background that had a nice horizon line and then arranged the cars facing a central point and played with the front-back arrangement. For the surface on which the cars sit I chose a fiber glass pattern which I tweaked a little and masked with a dark to light gradient.  Now the problem was that flipping two of the cars to face the center forced me to erase the text on the licence plate of the Mercedes and replace it with left to right text - WEB3BOX. I used the healing tool for that to keep the original aspect of the background and then made the text blend in a little by bringing the opacity to 80%.

Here's how the final result looks like:
